Step by step guide:
Step 1:
Book an Intro Flight
Take the First Step Toward Becoming a Helicopter Pilot
Your Intro Flight is where it all begins. This hands-on lesson gives you the chance to sit in the pilot’s seat and experience what it’s really like to fly a helicopter—with a certified instructor right beside you.
During your flight, you’ll get an overview of the helicopter’s controls, learn how each one affects the aircraft, and even take the controls yourself under your instructor’s guidance. It’s not just a ride—it’s your first real lesson in becoming a helicopter pilot.
An Intro Flight is the perfect way to:
-
See if flying helicopters is the right fit for you
-
Learn what professional helicopter training looks like
-
Ask questions about licensing, career paths, and next steps
Whether your goal is a new career in aviation or simply to check “fly a helicopter” off your bucket list, this is the best way to get started.

Step 2:
Get Your Medical
Get Your FAA Medical Certificate
Before you can begin flight training, you’ll need to pass a routine aviation medical exam with an FAA-authorized Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). This exam ensures you’re healthy and fit to fly—it’s quick, straightforward, and valid for several years depending on your age and certificate level.
During your visit, the AME will review your medical history, check your vision and hearing, and perform a standard physical exam. Once approved, you’ll receive your FAA Medical Certificate, which you’ll need before solo flight.
Getting your medical early is an important step—it helps confirm that you’re eligible to pursue your pilot license and avoids delays once training begins.
Need help finding a local AME? Our instructors can recommend examiners in the Mat-Su Valley and Anchorage area who regularly work with new flight students.
Step 3:
Enroll in Flight & Ground Training
Once you’ve completed your intro flight and received your medical, you’re ready to officially begin your training. You’ll dive into ground school, where you’ll learn aviation theory, weather, navigation, airspace, and helicopter systems—everything you’ll need to pass the FAA written exam and your check ride.
At the same time, you’ll begin hands-on flight lessons, learning maneuvers and procedures alongside your instructor.
Step 4:
Train & Study for your written test and checkride
As you log flight hours and refine your skills, you’ll also study aviation weather, navigation, and systems to prepare for the FAA written test. Your instructor will guide you through the knowledge and maneuvers needed to pass your checkride and earn your pilot certificate.
Step 5:
Checkride time!
Once you've met the requirements and your instructor agrees that you're ready, they will help you schedule your checkride with an Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE). This is the final test that will earn you your license!
Step 4:
Continue your education
After you've celebrated your success, it's time to start your next rating! A good pilot is always learning.
